Grief and Loss
Grief is a natural response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief will be. You may associate grief with the death of a loved one – which is often the cause of the most intense type of grief – but any loss can cause grief, including:
- Divorce or relationship breakup
- Death of a pet
- Loss of health
- Loss of a cherished dream
- Losing a job
- A loved one’s serious illness such as dementia
While loss affects people in different ways, many experience the following symptoms when they’re grieving.
- Shock and disbelief
Counselling will help when the pain of the loss is so constant and sever that it keeps you from resuming your life. It helps you work through the painful stages of grief in a safe environment where you can express your feelings and fears.
